Japanese subculture: Otaku

When I was in Australia, many of my friends was talking about the Japanese anime culture, and I was often called an Otaku. It's true that I have interest in Japanese anime, and I didn't really mind if people thought that I am an otaku for that, but I do not appreciate people criticizing people about their country's stereotype. Even in the Japanese society, people treat otakus inappropritely, but I think it's okay for people to have their own interests. We should all respect what others have interest in.

  1. Agreed. Did you think the word otaku was treated differently in Australia? Here, it usually means a geek or something but in foreign countries, is it treated in a good way?

  2. Here, I am Otaku, too. I've really loved Japanese animations aince I was high school student. I went to a lot of places where I can buy goods of animations. I'm proud of my hobby (Animation). I know there exists some stereotyped ideas all over the world. However, I would say that he/she is OTAKU if they really love one thing, such as cosmetic, clothes, sports, taking pictures, whatever. I guess Otaku has defined as not good meaning in Japan. In Japan, most of people might image that Otaku is people who really love the animations and wear not cool clothes like that... I hope they change their minds someday...XO

  3. I guess the Aussie kids didn't really understand what "otaku" means. Of course we should all be free to do whatever we're interested in, although those who know the individuals involved should be strong enough/loving enough to say something if the interest is becoming more like an obsession that is causing them to have trouble in other areas of their lives. The same could be said of a person who likes a few beers. That's fine, until they start to drink more and more and can't cope with life so well.

  5. I agree with you.
I don't care whether a person is otaku or not, but I hope the person spend one's life not only for the interests but also others like studying or part time job.
